This spring, make sure you're investing in furniture that will never go out of style.
Classic, simple lines on investment pieces are a must for 2009.
Joseph Branco, an interior decorator in London, says that in furniture this season, everything is being scaled down, "with couches, they aren't as deep and arms aren't as big as before. Tables aren't as wide. The idea is to cater to smaller spaces or people who are downsizing."
The theme of space saving continues, as Branco sees multifunctional pieces becoming a fixture in every home. "We're starting to see more coffee tables that double as desks, buffets that can be used as television stands and shelving units that double as room dividers."
Sectional pieces are still popular and functional, but the scale is changing so that the furniture doesn't overwhelm the space. However this shift in sizing is certainly not accompanied by any loss in luxury. Take the crystal chandelier, for example. It's a classic that's been given a modern edge this year with understated but luxurious organza shades.
Pairing Persian rugs with more modern-styled furniture gives the elegant staple in floor-coverings new life.
This year the home furnishing industry is also introducing warmer shades of wood, like walnut and cherry, as opposed to the dark finishes we're used to, says Branco. Sustainable materials used in furniture are going to be more popular as well. Pieces made from sustainable growth forests or from interesting new materials like bamboo are hotter than ever and friendly to the planet.
Using antique elements is a great way to recycle old pieces in a contemporary setting and really personalize your living space. Since trends are leaning towards slimmer furnishings, your grandmother's delicate end tables won't look out of place next to a new streamlined sofa.
Branco continued to say that mirrored pieces are going to be a major feature this season because, "they give the illusion of space, and can either be surrounded with wood or wrought iron to fit into your decor scheme."
With the prevalence of slimmer neutral furniture, the fun is in pieces like pillows, decorative throws and artwork that can give your living spaces a new look for minimal cost. When you have a solid base to work from creating a customized, one-of-a-kind environment is easy.
Remember: it's better to save your money for good quality, versatile staple pieces that will still be contemporary 10 years down the road, than to splurge on a funky feature that won't be able to withstand the ebb of home fashion. Look for something in a relatively neutral colour and durable fabric that's going to be able to withstand the test of time in your home.
